Anime popularity in North America is growing faster and faster every year. In the last decade alone, the number of attendees at the Canadian anime convention Anime North has increased from 3000, to over 22,000. That’s an increase of over 600 percent! However, despite its growth and popularity, North American media has yet to incorporate anime art styles and themes into their content, with the exception of Avatar the Last Airbender. However, in July of this year, this will change drastically. From the creators of the popular web series Red vs Blue, and the animator who brought us Haloid and Dead Fantasy: This is RWBY.
RWBY is a project that was announced by Roosterteeth after the conclusion of Red vs Blue’s 10th season. For those of you not familiar with Roosterteeth, they were one of the first groups to host video content online, long before video hosting sites like Youtbe even existed. In order to expand their flagship show RVB, they recruited the Youtube famous Monty Oum to do animation for the show, and if you’ve never seen his work, stop reading and watch this.
Now I can’t say much about RWBY because both Monty and Roosterteeth are keeping us in the dark as much as possible. What I do know is that the show will premiere at Roosterteeth’s personal convention: RTX. It will also feature four protagonists, two of which we have already been introduced to by the recent trailers: Ruby and Wiess. There’s not a lot of detail about what the general plot of this series will be, or even what the runtime of each episode will be. What I can tell you is that like everything Monty Oum makes, there will be amazing fight sequences that are both beautiful in style and execution. The animation featured in both trailers is breathtaking. If didn’t know better, I would have said “White” was a trailer for a Japanese video game; that’s how polished it looks. Finally, the soundtrack is done by Jeff Williams, the same artist who does the music for Red vs Blue, which has been pretty damn awesome for the last 2 seasons. So if you haven’t had a change, check out these trailers!
